You might have come across the words like POG or a PogChamp on twitch, but wait, do you know what POG really means? Well, it is an acronym used for Play of the Game. Streamers use emote to represent their responses, i.e., surprise and shock when they make an acclaimed move while playing a game. The expression has been used on twitch for a period of nine years.
Origin of Pog Twitch Emotes:
Some people may think of the first PogChamp as a staged expression. However, the story is somewhat different; PogChamp originated back in 2010 from the blooper video of Ryan Gootecks Gutierrez. The expression consequently was adopted on twitch after a few years. In the recording, it was seen that Gootecks had an exchange with Mike Ross when out of the blue, the cameraman bowled over the tripod. The POG emote came from Gootecks’ reaction.
Subsequently, the name of emote was taken from the infamous game of the 90s Gootecks and Ross were playing, i.e., POG. They were using MadCatz joystick for this purpose. Eventually, Gootecks emerged as the victor of the competition and was crowned as “PogChamp.”
Ever since emote has gained immense popularity on twitch, every time a great move or a good play is made and the enthusiasm is needed to be expressed, emote is spammed in streams.
Banning of Pog:
6th January 2021 marks the day when Gootecks emote got banned on twitch. The decision was derived from the Gootecks’ call on civil unrest for the woman who lost her life during Capitol riots in January 2021.
New Pog on Twitch:
After its removal, twitch subsequently introduced the new emote making it easier for streamers to express themselves. It picked Sean Plott’s suggestion to flick through random streamers’ faces when PogChamp emote was spammed. The Twitch community finally voted for KomodoHype emotes as the new representative face of POG.
