How to back up in Windows 10

Backup  or backup tasks  are essential maintenance techniques for a professional who intends to  protect the personal and corporate information  of a computer team, as they remind us in the weekend that celebrates the World Backup Day .

In addition, in case of problems, having the ability to recover them in  a simple and fast way  with the consequent saving of valuable time in installation of the operating system, configuration, applications and data, is something that is priceless.

Although the security measures at the hardware and software level of today’s computers are extensive, no equipment is safe from data loss. Due to a physical problem in the random access memories or in the system storage unit, due to a corruption of the operating system generally caused by some application or driver installation. Or because of a malware infection considering that 100% security in a connected world is simply impossible.

The use of multiple devices in the era of connectivity is a great advantage in productivity and mobility, but it can complicate the safeguarding of data and hence the  importance of Backup . To perform them, the industry offers powerful third-party applications, but the operating systems themselves have their own applications solutions. Microsoft’s latest operating system, Windows 10, also offers its own backup, restore and recovery tools that we review in this post.

Full system backup

It is the indicated method when we want to safeguard  all the data of the equipment, operating system, configuration, applications and user files . The tool will create a complete image that we can restore in case of critical errors in it. For it:

  • Access the¬†¬†¬†system¬†control panel
  • Click on¬†¬†Backup and restore
  • Click on¬†¬†Create a system image
  • Choose where the image will be saved, on a hard drive or flash drive, on DVD optical discs or on a network drive
  • Confirm and start the process by clicking¬†¬†Start Backup

The backup can take from 10 minutes to several hours depending on the amount of data to be processed, although the equipment can normally be used during the process. The tool does not allow you to customize the files to be included, but it is a simple method that can be implemented from the same operating system, which will produce a complete image of the system that we can restore in case of problems.

File Backup

It is the indicated method to save a file backup to recover if they are lost or damaged.

  • Access the¬†¬†¬†system¬†control panel
  • Click on¬†¬†File History
  • Connect an external drive such as a hard drive or USB flash drive or choose a network drive
  • If you have several, select the unit to be used by the file history
  • Click on the¬†Activate¬†¬†button
  • The tool will save the files of the Libraries, Desktop, Contact and Favorites
  • If you do not want to save specific folders and libraries you can add them in the exclusions section

Once activated for the first time, you can access the  Advanced Settings  to choose how often copies will be made and how long the saved versions will be maintained. In case of problems you just have to click on the option  Restore personal files  and choose the version of the files you want to return to their original location.

Advanced recovery

Complementing the previous backup and restore options, Windows 10 also offers an advanced recovery tool. The option to restore has been simplified in Windows 10 Creators Update, although its objective remains the same, to restore the operating system to its factory default settings, overcoming the problems of system degradation that occurs with its use, the installation of applications or drivers or the introduction of some type of malware. Very useful in case of problems. To activate it:

  • Access the¬†¬†¬†system¬†control panel
  • Click on¬†¬†Recovery
  • Click on¬†¬†Configure System Restore
  • Activate system protection and disk space usage by clicking¬†¬†Configure
  • Create a system restore point

From here, restore points will be created automatically. As the space chosen for the protection of the system is filled, previous restoration points will be eliminated. To return to a previous point the same tool offers the function to  restore the system and correct the problems . Restoring the system does not affect documents, images or other personal data.

As we have seen, Windows 10 offers several possibilities for backup, restoration and recovery. A type of essential tools that can save our lives in case of problems . If a replacement of the damaged hardware can be solved, the loss of professional or personal files can have a great cost and sometimes  without possible recovery  and hence the importance of regularly performing these maintenance tasks that we recommend
