Video games are supposed to make us feel happy and relaxed—they are a form of escape from the harsh real world. Ironically, there are many video games that are designed to make us feel pain and surprisingly, there are players who adore such challenges.
This brings us to today’s article where we will be introducing ten video games that will truly grind your gears and will make you want to quit altogether. If you want to test the limits of your patience, these are the games for you.
Also, if you have other video game needs like top-ups and reloads, be sure to do so with OffGamers!
Now that has been said and done, let’s begin!
1. The Dark Souls Series
For those who are familiar with the video game scene, you’ll know that the Dark Souls games have cemented themselves as one of the toughest games to beat. More so than not, many have even given up on the game due to its punishing gameplay.
In these games, almost everything around you is trying to kill you. Every hit from the enemies hit like a truck and the bosses are extremely gimmicky with their moves. Still, it is a very fun challenge but if you are someone who loses their cool easily, rage quitting is just a matter of time!
2. Hades
Hades is a wonderfully crafted game filled with characters that are made with love and soul. While we have to say the gameplay is just as awesome, as a roguelike, it is very punishing and casual gamers might want to just turn off the game after a couple of deaths.
To get out of Hell, you’ll need to pass through various obstacles and they are no easy feat. The guards and bosses are sneaky and sometimes extremely cheap with their attacks. In other words, you won’t get out of Hell without dying. It is part of the game’s charm but you will need an extremely high patience level to grit through.
3. FIFA Series
The FIFA games that we’re referring to are the ones that include Ultimate Team. That mode alone has made players break their controllers and sometimes even their monitors. Seriously with the occasional lag and RNG gameplay, it’s hard to not rage at FIFA.
We’ll admit, building your own fantasy football squad is fun with your favourite players. However, once they step onto the pitch, everything changes. The ball hitting the post and conceding a late-minute equaliser are only a few things that make you want to pull your hair off!
4. Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy
Funnily enough, some insane players have found Getting Over It to be therapeutic for them but for the vast majority, this game really just makes us want to turn our PC off.
Starting off rather innocent, the game has a cute premise where you play as a goofy character stuck in a huge pot, trying to make it up to the top. Well, it is actually not that innocent because, at every moment, this game is trying to knock you back down to the starting line.
Plus, it is also extremely frustrating to have the narrator back seating you towards your journey. It is painful for the ears and is intentionally done to make you rage quit.
5. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
When a game developer—known for its punishing gameplay—decides that you’ll get a second chance, you’ll know something’s up. And yes, even by their standards, Sekiro is super hard with its complex boss fights that have weirdly hard-to-read behaviours.
Essentially, Sekiro is a game you’ll need to lab a lot and in the process, death is your best friend. Every time you feel like you have the edge against the boss, it’ll do something absurd to catch you off guard. In that sense, many players have quit the game and to be fair, if you value your sanity that is a wise option!
6. Tekken 7
Just learning one specific character is enough for you to rage quit. Being able to successfully land and execute a combo is a feat itself in Tekken 7.
Even after getting a couple of combos down, jumping into online ranked battles in Tekken 7 is rough. There, you’ll meet a lot of smurfs who will absolutely demolish you. Adding to the fact that they’ll most likely be latency issues, beginners will most likely also drop their combos. It’s frustrating to play but after getting that win, the sensation is surreal.
7. Elden Ring
Deserving of all its accolades, Elden Ring is a true masterpiece that boasts stunning graphics and superb world-building. Its gameplay is equally as immersive but for casuals, it can be too cruel because you know FromSoftware doesn’t hold back.
Being an open-world game also means that there will be a lot of things in the game’s environment that are out there to kill you. Most of the time, these hazards come out of nowhere and you’ll wonder—how did I just die? Hence, if you do want to start this game, you better get used to dying unexpectedly!
8. Only Up!
This game’s frustrating levels are more or less similar to Getting Over It. A very simple premise and gameplay but will make you want to throw your gaming accessories through the wall. Again, the entire game’s environment is against you and you’ll have to overcome that.
Design-wise, this game is brilliant. It’s made up of the most random things and we do enjoy that quirkiness. Unfortunately, that’s the thing about randomness, you just don’t know what to expect. When making your way to the top, all of a sudden there’s an unpredictable obstacle that will bring you down.
It can get very annoying and truly, we can see why players and streamers decide to just up and quit the game!
9. Super Mario Bros.
Now this is certainly a classic. Super Mario Brothers is an exceptionally charming game. It is one of the era-defining platformers that has set the standard for the genre. And like with most platformers, they can very much make people quit in a flash.
Assuming you’re playing the game blind, Super Mario Bros. can prank you with the silliest of things. To play this game well, you’ll need to get your tempo and timing correct. Without them, you’ll see yourself dying to projectiles and random mushrooms that move at an absurd pace.
Completing this game will require a good number of trial-and-error, and just not many people are that patient.
10. Cuphead
Cuphead just oozes beauty and charm. The lovely old-school aesthetic is refreshing to see in a scene dominated by AAA titles. For its gameplay, it is very reminiscent of the Metal Slug games and arguably way harder.
As gorgeously nasty-looking as the bosses might be, they are also extremely mischievous. Each of them has its own playstyle and quirk that you’ll need to adapt very quickly or else, death awaits you. Trust us, we’ve seen a lot of players give up and truly the game doesn’t hold your hand at all. You’ll have to test and experience the game before you can attempt any of its bosses.
Final Thoughts
Yay! We’ve made it to the end! Don’t get us wrong, as much as these games are very rage-inducing, they are all amazing games, so they are definitely worth a shot. Just go into these games knowing that death is a common thing and you’re not the only one dying. Either way, we’re sure you’ll have a blast playing them!
