With equipment such as the Huawei Matebook or the Huawei Matebook X Pro , the Chinese multinational wants to repeat in the segment of laptops, the unquestionable success it has experienced with its mobile phones.
And until a few months ago, we would say that it wasn’t going badly. The new generation of equipment, presented at the last MWC in Barcelona, boasted both design and specifications, while maintaining a great balance between performance and price.
Almost five months after that presentation, it does not seem that the brand will have it easy. The open trade war between China and the United States, coupled with the veto imposed by the Trump Administration on everything that “smells” Huawei puts the future of these laptops in a frankly complicated situation.
However, as we will see below, the case of Matebooks is not exactly the same as that of smartphones or the development of 5G networks and precisely now, it could be interesting to acquire some equipment that is likely to begin to be offered at a great price.
Let’s see however the circumstances that currently affect the present and future of these teams.
How Huawei sanctions affect the United States
As we have told in recent weeks, the United States government is doing everything possible and impossible to veto the development of Huawei’s main business lines, especially in its area of mobile telephony and, above all, in the development Technological related to 5G.
In recent weeks we have seen how companies such as Google, Intel, Nvidia and others have promised not to supply components or deliver software updates to the Chinese manufacturer’s equipment.
So, it is true that if the company is not able to “convince” Intel, AMD or ARM to provide the technology it needs to continue developing its equipment, the future of the Matebook does not seem very promising.
But in any case, this would only affect the equipment that has not yet been manufactured ( remember that there is a minimum moratorium of three months before the sanction is applied ) and the multinational has affirmed by active and passive that it has collected Everything you need to continue manufacturing devices of all kinds for a while.
Microsoft and Intel will continue to support Huawei laptops
But what happens to those that have already been manufactured and can we buy in store? Will they receive security updates? Can users continue to enjoy the latest versions of Windows 10?
For the peace of mind of the potential users of these devices, Microsoft is committed to continue supporting the firm’s laptops. In a recent press release, those of Redmond claimed that “Our initial evaluation of the decision of the US Department of Commerce.
About Huawei has indicated that we can continue to offer Microsoft software updates to customers with Huawei devices. ” Along the same lines, Microsoft has re-sold the Chinese brand laptops in its online store, after having removed them a week ago.
Similarly, Intel has also announced that it will continue to provide security updates to the company’s portable computers both at the BIOS level, and in current and future security breaches that may be experienced by the components that are part of those computers.
Are they safe devices?
Let us not forget, however, what has caused all this controversy: the accusation that Huawei devices hide software capable of monitoring the activities that are carried out on them for allegedly serving it in a tray to the Chinese government. That is, the United States accuses Huawei of being spying on its users .
Part of this accusation is based on the fact that Microsoft itself discovered that the Huawei Matebook X included a factory-installed backdoor , which would allow the company to access its data. But once denounced, it is true that Huawei patched the vulnerability and bluntly denied the accusations of having intentionally installed a “backdoor.”
He also pointed to the fact that it is not the only company that develops laptops that have faced similar security problems, or have suffered even worse exploits, which is true.
Beyond the above, no one has managed to put on the table forceful evidence that demonstrates some type of illegal activity that is being developed in any device manufactured by Huawei.
Should you trust Huawei to buy your next laptop?
With all these elements, there is currently no rational reason why we should avoid buying a laptop manufactured by Huawei. And yet, not all the decisions we make are rational. Although the numbers add up and we have all the information we need on the table, many times we act by instinct.
By instinct we know that the problems that the company is going through right now, we will not find in HP, Dell, Acer, Lenovo or any other manufacturer. And that certainly does not play in favor of Huawei. And yet, why not break a spear in your favor? Why not value these teams for what they really are?
If we believe that by design, performance and price fit with us, there should be no reason that prevents us from acquiring them.
